Why Does Fall Make Us Want to Cozy Up Our Homes?

Fall has a way of making us want to cozy up our homes. As the colors change outside and the days get shorter, we start craving that same warmth inside. But creating that fall feeling doesn't mean you have to completely redecorate.

I was walking through the Furniture Mall showroom in Topeka recently when one of our fall displays stopped me. It immediately made me want to go home and do the same thing to my living room. So I asked our visual merchandiser, Tyler Taphorn, to describe some of the choices he had made. His answer was surprisingly simple: "Added splashes of rust tones, neutral pumpkins and fall leaves."

Furniture Mall visual merchandiser Tyler Taphorn used rust tones, neutral pumpkins and fall leaves to give this Topeka showroom display a warm, cozy fall feel.

Then it hit me how easy it actually is to bring that fall feeling inside. You don't have to change every inch of a room. Just adding a few elements can change the whole mood.

How Can You Make Your Home Feel Like Fall Without Completely Redecorating?

Sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves to do a whole seasonal changeover. New pillows, new decor, new everything. But creating that fall feeling doesn't have to be a big project.

Start with what you have, then pick two or three of these to add to your room:

  • Warm colors: rust, orange, brown or earthy neutrals
  • Cozy textures: a chunky throw, soft pillows or a plush rug
  • Warm light: lamps and candles instead of bright overhead lighting
  • Scent: something subtle that makes you think of fall like cinnamon or pumpkin.
  • Natural elements: fall leaves, branches, pumpkins or other touches inspired by what's changing outside.

How Do You Know When  You've Got It Right?

Cozy isn't really a decorating style. It's more of a feeling

It's the chair you want to curl up in, the blanket you reach for, and the lamp beside you while you read a good book. Getting it right isn't about having a perfectly decorated home. It's creating a home that feels right to you. So take a cue from nature this fall. Add a little warmth, texture, and a few seasonal touches to what you already have.

You don't have to change the whole room to change how the room feels
