The Authenticity of the Amish

Handcrafted wooden furniture showcasing timeless craftsmanship and quality.

Towards the back of The Furniture Mall, is an old buggy. You may come across it and ask, “What is that doing in a furniture store?”. The reason it is parked there is to pay a sort of homage to the Amish brand, a collection of three designers: Millcraft, Heartland Heritage Amish, and Fusion Designs.

The buggy we have parked in our Amish section

Our furniture store carries their creations. Heartland Heritage does dining and bedroom, Fusion Designs does the whole house, and Millcraft only does bedrooms. What makes them so unique from other brands is that the wood within is genuine wood all the way through. Some furniture brands just do a layer of veneer, a decorative covering of wood. Others might do pine as the base, but put a layer of maple on the top. Amish furniture is solid wood and can be made from maple, oak, quarter sewn oak (cut differently), walnut, or elm. You’re not going to find another wood within their products. The price varies on the rarity of the wood, but it is worth to price to have a piece of furniture that will hold out over the years.

The options of wood for customization

There are also customization options for our Amish furniture. The size can be adjusted to whatever you have in mind. Is there a nice, maple table you found, but it’s not quite large enough for your family? We can get you a larger one with a special order. Servers and buffets can also be adjusted to any height, and you can add cushions, leather, and a swivel function for the chairs.

The stain can also be customized. Each piece is sanded down, the stain is slathered on, and then the conversion varnish is added for that last protective seal. Conversion varnish is one of the best finishes that can be applied to wood in general. In order to even harden properly there needs to be a correct ratio of the two chemicals that are added. It is evident that quality is taken into consideration for every piece of furniture in the Amish collection.

The family-oriented aspect of the Amish brand comes through in the way the furniture is made. As a community, the members designate the tasks that each person can handle to make sure that the furniture is made well by the older generations, but that the younger generations are learning the craft as well. For example, in a bedroom set, the young boys help assemble the smaller pieces of furniture: the nightstands, the dresser drawers. The older men, design the larger pieces of furniture: the beds, the dressers. The women in Amish communities also contribute, they help in the assembly process and with the sanding down of the wood.

A nice personal touch to the furniture is that they are wrapped up in blankets. It’s like you are receiving a gift from a loved one, a treasure that they are trusting you to cherish.

So, come in to observe the simple, yet sophisticated handiwork. Choose your wood and be confident that it will never splinter. Feel satisfied that a whole community of people working together, made you a piece of quality furniture.

If you are looking for furniture that will last you a lifetime, the Amish collections at The Furniture Mall are a gift for your home that is built to last.
